The filigree was very decorative, but it had another purpose, in that it would be hard, very hard to extract anything above the size of a small ring without touching the filigree. Much like one would make a screen, but the filigree was thin enough that it could be bent easily... which fit well with his line of thought. After all, if one cut the glass and removed the jewel, the weight would be mild, and easily replaced. In this case, perhaps that was the second trap.
